Re: Call for Palm Springs Police to Enforce Facial Covering Order

Mayor Kors:

Please send a police patrol with a public address system to North Avenida Caballeros to enforce the order for people to cover their faces when in public, e.g., the public sidewalks no matter whether others are near them or not.  Simply put, numerous people on the streets of Palm Springs are needlessly and illegally endangering the health of the public and it is time for the police to take action to assure compliance.

The police need start merely with patrolling and informing pedestrians without masks via the PA system of the requirement to wear a mask or covering of their noses and mouths. Seriously, that would certainly help and should be done immediately.

Just moments ago 4/13/2020, I witnessed numerous people without facial covering walking and worse, running in tandem pair, on the 600 block of N. Caballeros Avenida near Ruth Hardy Park.  These actions are violations of Riverside County Health Order (incorporated by Palm Springs) for the public to to cover faces while in public. URL (1)  Over the last four days, I have witnessed the same occur on Alejo and Caballeros.  Three people did so as a police cruiser drove passed them at slow speed but the officer said nothing to them to get them to follow the law.

Merely breathing is an expectorant of viral load a person carries, and walking leaves a plume of each person’s microbiome behind them.  Running with heavy respiration and two people running together leave a much larger and longer plume.  The incidents today occurred as my 73 year old spouse with other vulnerabilities and I left our residence within 15 seconds of us entering the right of way wearing masks to get some much need exercise.  He has not been near other people for over 20 days now so I turned us around to retreat back to our home.

SARS-CoV-2 IS NOW REPORTED TO TRAVEL UP TO THIRTEEN 13 FEET, not the mere 6 feet of most guidance published currently.

The  April 13, 2020 International Financial Times (2)  provides a new report published by the CDC:

'New research out of China claims to show droplets infected with SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), the virus that causes COVID-19, and sprayed into the air by persons coughing and talking might travel as far away as four meters or 13 feet. It also claims shoes of health workers in Wuhan, China tending COVID-19 patients were infected by SARS-CoV-2.'

'The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published a study (3) in Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID), its open-access, peer-reviewed journal, showing SARS-CoV-2 can spread further than previous estimates. The study authored by Chinese researchers carries the title "Aerosol and Surface Distribution of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 in Hospital Wards, Wuhan, China, 2020. ‘
